About Us

Move Your Arts was established in 2007 to promote artists in the South West of England.  Our initial project was Unseen South Hams, in 2008 - a show that included work by established local artists, up-and-coming artists from the area and local students.  The exhibition aimed to reveal a side of the South Hams not usually documented by artistic work and at the same time, foster the development of young, local artistic talent.  Our constant goal is to display the talent, invention and relevance of contemporary artists based in an area stereotyped as a haven for touristy arts and crafts.  Our long-term project remains to take a number of local artists to Bristol, promoting the artistic output of our area and highlighting the appeal of Bristol as a cultural centre for the south-west and a viable alternative to London.

Kate Marshall

Born in the UK in 1982, Kate lives and works in Devon.  After completing a foundation course in Art and Design at Falmouth College she graduated from Goldsmiths in 2004 with a BA in Fine Art and Art History.  In 2006 she was selected for the Noise Festival, a national showcase for emerging creative talent judged by Stella Vine.  Live performances often feature in her shows; including the 2006 Liverpool Biennial, which received coverage on BBC2 and her debut London solo exhibition, which was singled out by the Sunday Times as a must-see.  Kate has been asked to participate in fundraisers for women's rights in Mexico alongside Tracey Emin and The Royal Society of Painters and for the Prince's Trust at Bonhams.  Her current long-term work-in-progress is a limited edition run of hand-bound artist's books of prints based on Vasari's Lives of the Great Artists.  A solo show on the history of her local area is planned for Dartmouth in November 2010.

James Stewart

Originally from Stockport, James has been based in Devon for over 10 years.  He studied at the Dyfed College of Art, Carmarthen and worked as a freelance illustrator in Manchester designing book and album covers before moving south to pursue a career in Fine Art.   In 2001, he established the Stewart Gallery and Studio after running Artworks in Dartmouth's Foss Street.   His work has been shown at such prestigious UK exhibitions as the Royal Festival Hall, the London South Bank Exhibition, the Royal Academy Summer Show, the Benson and Hedges Gold Award and the BP National Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery.  As well as running his own gallery and exhibiting locally James manages to show his work as far afield as New York, Glasgow, Bristol, Sydney and Melbourne.  Portrait commissions have included Picasso's model Sylvette David and Sir Terry Frost of the RCA.

Jack Corrigall

Jack is a German to English translator specialising in Art and Culture and is the group's most recent newcomer to the area.  Having spent his formative years in Hong Kong he moved to the UK to study History and German at Keele University and then Modern Chinese at The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.   He has been in Devon since 2002 and was involved with the Small Originals gallery in Ashburton and www.isendyouthis.com.  Since completing his language studies with a Masters in Translation at the University of Exeter in 2009, he has translated for several artists and galleries in the UK and Germany.  His largest project has been a series of essays on a Viennese photography exhibition tackling the issue of ex- and re-appropriation of Jewish possessions in Austria, which is now used as part of the teaching sylabus at Exeter University.
